Minimum order quantity (MOQ) in China and how to handle it
The minimum order quantity is often the first obstacle for new importers. Understanding why it exists helps you negotiate it.
Why it differs between suppliers
Factories set MOQs to cover machine set-up, materials and packaging. Market shops holding stock can often accept less. Custom colours, prints or packaging raise the minimum.
How to lower it
- Ask whether the MOQ is per colour or per model across colours.
- Choose items already in stock instead of made-to-order.
- Accept a slightly higher unit price for a smaller first order.
- Combine several items from the same supplier to reach an acceptable order value.
When it is not worth it
If shipping and clearance for a tiny quantity make the landed cost uncompetitive, consider consolidating several products in one shipment or postponing.
